a lot of boring stuff about the cast of riverwood

11.17.02 @ 12:13 a.m.

I spent some time this evening working up an image of some of the primary characters of Riverwood Park.

The main character is Emma Rowland. I found an old painting on pemberley.com in their Regency Images section that was sufficently musical. The others are almost all from the Regency images section as well, but I couldn't find an image of a painting that suited my mental picture of Robert Beckford (whom I consider a main character even if he didn't show up until nearly 20,000 words in...) so I took a picture of Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly in Emma which fit that image well enough. The other photo is a picture I saved because it showed the uniform of the 95th Rifles. Hey, I needed a man in uniform!

Emma is a slightly spoiled but generally nice girl with a tendency to tease and an occasionally quick temper. She's a little withdrawn, prefers country living to London. She's a bit like me in that she's (at this point) terminally nice. Richard Steadmond, who's an absolute bastard of a character spreads nasty stories left and right and she'd rather weather the storm than attack him after she's already inadvertantly broken his heart by rejecting his proposal.

George is her older brother. He's a nice enough fellow. He's going to fall in a bad way for Lavinia who's a avaricious, scheming thing who only wants to marry for money and status. She goes for George but breaks his heart by making a play for his wealthier friend.

That wealthier friend is Beckford. He met Emma at a ball but was mislead by Richard Steadmond's tales of woe and insults her (though not to her face). She is called away before she can straighten him out and is forgotten by Emma, who has rather gotten under his skin. At some point he befriends George and is called on for advice on matters of estate business and they are thrown into each others company again.

John Carmichael is a cousin of the Rowlands (Emma and George) who stays with them early in the novel and marries Emma's good friend Isabella Steadmond

The Misses Brandon, Julia and Rachel, befriend Emma while she is staying in Staffordshire. It remains to be seen whether they'll reappear in the story. (Right now, Emma has just left Staffordshire in a hurry as her father has grown ill in Kent.)

Oh, and Col. Carter is Lavinia's brother and also a scheming fortune hunter and tries to charm the pants off Emma but she sees through him.

I bet that was boring, huh? I would be better served putting that in the Riverwood diary, but, well, my gold membership is here and I don't want to disrupt the flow of my storyline there.
